Personally, I can't justify the price of UHD BD's for what are likely to be slight increases in colour definition and compression quality over standard BD's. I got a little carried away with the video resolution aspect of the UHD BD format and you've opened my eyes to the other difference which I'll definitely consider in the future.

Less video information is thrown away to fit a 2K DI onto a 4K Blu-ray Disc than the amount that has to be thrown away to fit it onto a standard 1080p disc. HDR isn’t just about bright, saturated colors it also allows for better definition in the shadows and highlights of images. There’s typically a very slight improvement in sharpness for a 2K upscale to a 4K Blu, but the bigger advantage is the improvement in color definition and compression quality. Color depth, dynamic range, and most importantly, compression quality, all play into video quality. There’s much more to video quality than just resolution. I’m sure you’ll think this means there’s no point whatsoever to a 2K upscale. That said, it’s 2048x1080 so it is still slightly higher resolution than a 1920x1080 Blu-ray.
